Pro VLA II Two Channel Vactrol-Based Compressor description:

The ART Pro VLA II Two Channel Vactrol-Based Compressor is a tube driven Vactrol®-based Compressor / Leveling amplifier designed to excel in any professional audio environment.

The ART Pro VLA II is an indispensable tool for tracking, mixing, mastering, dynamic control of live sound sources or for use in broadcast audio. The ART Pro VLA II is capable of delivering a far more musical natural sounding and sonically transparent compression than competitive units in its class, the ProVLA II uses an Opto-electronic circuit rather than the more typical design VCA driven level detection circuit.

This VCA-less design coupled with a 12AT7 vacuum tube in the gain stage makes the Pro-VLA II the ideal dynamic control device for critical audio applications. Exceptional signal integrity with extremely low noise and low distortion is achieved in the ProVLA II by utilizing a transformerless design throughout.

The ART Pro VLA II features Vactrol® Technology. Vactrol® design allows the ProVLA II to react to audio signal in much the same way the eye naturally adjusts to fluctuations in light levels – smoothly, quietly and almost imperceptibly. XLR and 1/4-inch TRS balanced inputs and outputs are provided to ensure the ProVLA II can connect with any audio source or hardware. A +4dBu/-10dBu mode switch optimizes ProVLA II I/O for either consumer or professional equipment.

The ART Pro VLA II Two Channel Vactrol-Based Compressor Main Features Include:

  • VCA-Less Vactrol Opto-Compression Design
  • Mastering Quality Audio Signal Path with Tube Gain Stage
  • Enhanced Link Mode – While in stereo link mode, channel 1 level control acts as a master output level and channel 2 becomes a balance control between them, - optimizing the Pro-VLA II for use as a mastering tool

Pros: +
Has a smooth clean punchy sound once you replace the tubes, I installed some nos siemens 1965's (sweet tubes) although I've saved the tubes that shipped with the unit as they sound good if your after a muddy / dirty signal path which I like on bass and drums sometimes vocal too

Cons: -
If I was to be picky I'd say the meters some times look as if they're out of sync but this doesn't really affect the audio performance

Pros: +
Great value for money!! This thing compresses smoothly and doesn't add too much mud to the sound. I would recommend this to anyone on a budget and wants a compressor that gets the job done.. Great on drums, bass and guitars..

Cons: -
Could use sidechain inputs..

Review:
A transparent stereo compressor with valves/tubes to warm the analogue signal and cheaper than some VST plug ins.

Pros Clarity, stereo option and price. Works well on instruments and on mix bus.

Cons No side chain input (but at this price point not really a con)
