X AIR XR16 Digital Mixer description:

The Behringer X AIR XR16 Digital Mixer is a powerful 16 input portable/rack-mountable mixer for iPad and Android tablets. Thanks to its 8 MIDAS-designed mic preamps, integrated Wi-Fi module for wireless control, plus USB connectivity for file storage, system updates and uncompressed stereo recordings via the USB Stereo Recorder, the XR16 is suited for both live and studio applications.

The X AIR XR16 lets you manipulate all parameters with your iOS device or PC. Using the free app, you can dial in the perfect sound from anywhere in the venue or control room. This is possible due to its integrated Wi-Fi module. You can connect up to 4 clients directly and concurrently via the Access Point mode. Wi-Fi Client allows you to add your mixer to the existing wireless network where the controlling apps and devices are connected. Alternately, wired connections can be made directly to your PC, to a local area network (LAN), or when connecting to a dedicated Wi-Fi router.

A front panel USB  connector gives you the ability to record you live stereo tracks directly to the connected USB flash media or hard drives. This means you can dial in the best possible live mix with effects and zero latency, whilst sending a dedicated stereo mix to your thumb drive for recording, or play background music in a break.

With applications such as an onstage panel discussion, press conference or courtroom proceeding, it can be hard to maintain so many open mics and ensure maximum gain for the moderator. This issue has been resolved by the revolutionary X AIR Gain Sharing technology. This, allows you to easily manage fully automated mixes with several live microphones. It automatically controls the levels of the selected microphones in real time, without any unwanted artefacts or noise modulation. The Gain Sharing noticeably reduces the feedback, studio noise and comb filtering changes that can occur when two or more mics are in close proximity of each other.

The XR16 is equipped with very same effects engines as the X32 digital mixing console. The virtual effects racks provides access to four stereo, multi-effects processors including delay, dynamics an chorus. Furthermore, the XR16 can run stereo reverbs concurrently with 31-band EQ on the main and aux buses, all without the need for any additional hardware. All these effects are controlled via the X-AIR  Android and iOS apps.

The XR16 has a 100-band real time analyzer with full bar and spectrograph views. This high resolution RTA displays the audio energy distribution in 100 frequency bands over time, capturing a sonogram window of a full 10 seconds. This 100-band real time analyzer is built into every input channel and bus EQ. You can view all the settings in the control app, allowing you to see and make surgical changes to frequencies in need of a boost or a cut. A low-cut, 4-band parametric EQ and the same Gate and Compressor dynamics suite found in the X32 are also found on every input channel. But now you can choose between expert or simple functionality. When in expert mode, you can get your hands on every tiny part of your dynamics. Simple mode is more suited for if you're the plug and play type, and lets you choose from one of four optimised presets, or load your own templates. A 40-bit, floating-point DSP has been added to the mix, meaning you'll experience virtually unlimited dynamic range with no internal overload and near-zero overall latency.

The main input of control for the XR16 comes from the X AIR apps for your computer, iOS or Android device. X AIR edit is a free piece of software that's compatible with either Windows, Mac and Linux. Simply install the software and connect your computer with a Cat5 cable, and now all X AIR mixer functions are instantly mirrored on your computer screen.  With the X AIR for iPad, you connect to the XR16 over Wi-FI, and when you are, all the settings can now be adjusted directly from your iPad. The app allows you to save your favourite scenes, and load previously stored scenes and presets r customize your channel layout, all using an innovative drag ’n’ drop system. The same goes for the X AIR app for Android.

Review:
Great product, very versatile for both live and studio
I have it working in the studio on a direct cat 5 connection and have used it on wifi on a mixture of ipad and android tablets simultaneously. Processing and patching is very comprehensive with great effects and signal processing, pre amps sound great. Records two tracks to data stick and plays back form the same device so creating master and backing tracks is easy. Loads of tutorial videos on the behringer site and on you tube so easy and simple to get up to speed on the software. Great value, good construction and is supported so one of my better buys!

The XR16 is a brilliant product. I have an X32, which I love, but for smaller gigs or conferences the XR16 perfect. Very compact, easy to use an reliable.

Review:
This is simply a great product. I use it with a combination of Windows laptop and Android tablet and it performs perfectly.

The sound is crystal clear, great FX and very intuitive once you have spent the time learning how to use the software for your platform of choice.

If you're new to mixing, especially in the digital world, then it may take a little time to get to grips with before using on a gig - but no more than any other digital console.

Review:
Good sounding unit. Put it in a rack rather than have pints thrown all over it using it as a stage box.

Needs more info on the playback function i.e. you have to convert your files to 48k WAVS to playback and that's not immediately apparent.

Review:
This is an amazing bit of kit. I use it for PA with local ceilidh bands, replacing an analogue set up.

It's a big step to go digital and trust a Wi-fi connection, if the signal were to drop out the unit would stay at the last settings, so as long as you haven't just muted something you would have time to get the connection back. After two gigs I'm really impressed, I haven't lost connection, but I have bought a 20m ethernet cable to give me a hardwired fall back plan. I've now bought a second one as back up, or I could use the two together.

There are so many features on this desk that it takes a while to get to grips with it. However, there are many tutorials on Youtube, and a user forum on Facebook. The bands love it, as they can now have four separate monitor feeds (five if you use the headphone jack). They can set their own mixes and levels on stage with the X Air Q app.

Coming from an analogue desk, the parametric eq. takes a bit of getting used to, but is simple to use. The real time analyser on all outputs is great for finding any feedback. I'm still wading through all the effects options. Behringer have published a manual for that bit.

It seems pretty solid, and has a tiny stage footprint. Just need to sell the analogue kit before the bottom falls out of the market!

Review:
Feature packed little unit. Took me a while to figure out some of the ins/outs, routing etc. But then discovered how versatile this XR 16 is. WiFi connection a breeze. I use it with an android tablet and an iPad and it's surprising how different the two interfaces are. Brilliant piece of kit which I thoroughly recommend, especially at this price. Discovered lots of tutorials on YouTube. FX are plentiful and sound great.

Review:
The mixer worked state from the box linked with my MacBook Pro and my iPad.

The software was easy to use there were more features on the Mac software than the iPad,
I could not find a save settings on the iPad but I ams still learning...

Pros the unit is small just place on the stage plugin and wonder with the iPad, also I like the way you can have multiple of tablets running at the same time so the band can adjust the own foldback (stage speakers of in eares) you can even give the assess to only part of the desk so only the foldback, not front of house.

Cons if you like the feel of sliders in your hand then this may not be for you (I am still learning the desk so other things may turn up).

Review:
I'm an occasional, amateur, sound engineer. I started doing very basic PA for my son's teenage bands and 20 yrs on I mostly do the sound for my church music festival. I'm sure my progression mixer/amp to separates to a small amount of outboard units to subs and tops and then active kit will be very familiar to some.
This kit is FANTASTIC! Without doubt the biggest improvement to my system for many years. I watched lots of YouTube, read lots of reviews and 'played' with the control app. on my laptop and phone. Then bought one in time for a wedding I'd agreed to do....
Even I, as a rank amateur, got a very good clear sound first time out for a 7 piece function band - trumpet and sax included!!
Don't hesitate! By all means take an Ethernet cable and laptop ' in case' but I found a cheap 10 tablet was perfect
Thanks Behringer
