Alpha 65 Active Nearfield Studio Monitors (Pair) description:

The Focal Alpha 65 Pair is a pair of Alpha 65 Active Nearfield Studio Monitors, each with a 6.5" Woofer, a 1" Aluminium Dome Tweeter, and 70 + 35 Watts. The Alpha 65 performs just as well with instrumental music as with electronic music and stand out with its versatility. With exclusive Focal technology, their expertise on loudspeaker drives the mechanical design of the Alpha studio monitors guaranteeing an optimal integration. The locations of music productions always differ, they often do not offer the optimal acoustics and the listening distances vary. Regardless of closed rooms, rooms with poor acoustics or music styles that require neutrality, dynamics and a high sonic pressure, the Alpha studio monitors are the solution. This model consists of a woofer/low-end loud speaker measuring 6.5" (16.5cm) with a Polyglass-Cone and an inverted dome-tweeter made from aluminium measuring 1" (25mm). It is equipped with a 35W amplifier for the tweeter and 70W for the woofer, delivering a frequency response of 45 Hz to 22 kHz (+/- 3dB).

The main features of the Focal Alpha 65 Pair include:

  • PAIR of Alpha 65 monitors
  • Low Bundling: retains the same throughout room
  • Dampening and stability: Neutrality, no distortion
  • Balance is the same at low and high volumes
  • Low sensitivity to wall effects
  • Up to 2 audio sources
  • Optimal acoustic integration
  • Reduced power consumption

Review:
An amazing sounding monitor tainted by a badly designed standby feature

The only bad thing I can say about them is that the standby feature has to be the most poorly designed standby feature I have ever come across.

At low volume the monitors seem to have difficulty consistently detecting the signal that is sending music to them.
They can't seem to tell the difference between a low music signal level and a no music signal.

So for me I have to boost the volume up for 5 secs or so every 25mins to stop them from switching to standby mode.

It also takes quite a crank of volume to unmute the monitors. And if one monitor switches to stanby mode while Im mixing, it's a hard pan on the mixer to that monitor to get it back on again.

That said, I love everything else about these monitors. From a sound point of view, they are a joy to mix on. They are very accurate and give enough of the low end to allow me to lock in the kick and bass. I can make eq moves with confidence.

So for me, these are a high quality sounding monitor. And to be honest it's not going to be easy to find something within this price range that would beat the Alphas.

I would have given these monitors 5 stars If they had a switch to bypass auto standby mode.
