The JBL Control 1 Passive Speaker provides 150W power in a small, compact, rugged polypropylene casing, and is easy to mount and maintain and comes with it own custom wall mount. All these aspects make the JBL Control 1 an ideal installation speaker, and it is no surprise that for the eagle-eyed, the JBL Control 1 is a common site in bars, pubs and retail outlets. Equally, its discreet size means that those who aren't looking for it are unlikely to notice it is even there!
Whilst the JBL Control One has made a name for itself as an installation speaker, it does also make a good reference monitor in the studio and a great home entertainment speaker too. The Control One is designed like no other speaker to be equally good in close proximity as it is from afar, and when it comes to easy wall mounting without compromising audio quality, nothing compares. The tough enclosure and grill mean that the occasional fall from a speaker stand or even from the wall will have little effect, again lending itself to 5.1 surround sound home cinema set-ups and wall mounted installations.
Within this hardy exterior, the JBL Control 1 houses a 5.25” low frequency driver and a 0.75” polycarbonate dome tweeter that together handle a maximum of 150watts and provide 114dB peak volume (SPL). The frequency range is impressive for such a compact speaker, operating within -10dB fall-off from 80Hz to 20kHz – not quite the full audible spectrum, but enough to give a good clean, warm and loud result. The crossover frequency where signal is split between the woofer and the tweeter sits at 4.2kHz, with an updated network delivering a very steep slope and providing a consistent frequency response of +/-3dB from 100Hz to 18kHz.
Although the protective casing is built to withstand dropping off the wall, the close attention of an inquisitive toddler or the occasional bang of a passing elbow, it still retains a very pleasing, soft and simply stylish look. Small, curvy, attractive and very enjoyable to listen to – all-in-all, very desirable!

What is a passive speaker?
A passive speaker requires amplification, so you would need to buy a power amplifier. An Active speaker has an amplifier built-in and therefore doesn't require the purchase of an additional amplifier. Active speakers are far more popular for studio monitoring,as the amplifier built in to the speaker is designed to match the power rating and sonic abilities of the speaker. For PA installations and larger rigs, passive remains the firm favourite as you don't need to supply power independently to each speaker.
